In my current body of work, I am presenting a personal viewpoint through interpretations of the natural world. By definition, a viewpoint can mean an actual place or position from which something is observed. It can also mean a personal interpretation or mental attitude. I explore both definitions in these works by layering images of natural elements such as water, rocks, hills, birds, fish and trees. The images are neither realistic nor abstract, but suggestive in ways that allow memory and imagination to be linked.
My goal is to allow viewers coming from unique vantage points to explore personal meanings or perspectives. The birds and fish help us to step back and look in, the boats help us navigate from one place to the next, the houses and rocks keep us grounded, and the water is always a transition connecting forms and places to each other. I also include shadows and reflections which mirror all these statements and remind us of nature’s symmetry and mystery. I love patterns, color and creating beautiful, interesting surfaces and layers in my work. I am currently working in both acrylic and watercolor.
