The natural world provides us a space for refuge and renewal. It evokes beauty, fragility and serenity. Nature is an invitation to dream, and encourages introspection.
In this body of artwork, I am looking out as well as peering into the natural world. This observation and active acquisition of information leads to discovery. And that in turn produces ideas to explore and interpret creatively (or imaginatively) in my studio.
Nature provides a mixture of images that are both simple and complex. Within my paintings I juxtapose the simplicity of a branch or sky with the intricate design and patterns found in rocks, water, flora and fauna. My paintings are intentionally segmented. That allows the viewer to peer in and examine closely the variety of lines and forms found in nature. Linking these segments also encourages the viewer to look out and reflect upon the interdependence of natural elements such as trees, rivers, birds, fish, skylines and landscapes. I love repetition and patterning which connect to both realistic and abstract forms found in the natural world.
